Holiday bags help warm homeless by SHELLY SLATER / WFAA-TVPosted on December 21, 2009 at 10:20 PM
FORT WORTH ― Most of us celebrate the holidays in a warm home with food on the table and presents under the tree. For those living on the street, though, the holidays aren't so bright … but there's one group trying to change that. In the wee hours of the morning when most of the city was asleep in warm beds, volunteers bagged up items many take for granted. “We try to put really practical items in there ― hats, gloves, socks, scarves, food items, lip balm ― just general items of necessity,” said Anna Gaines of the Labre Society. Volunteers hit the streets to help the homeless in Fort Worth. From the back of pickups and SUV's, they handed out presents for those who have no real place to call home. The bags were gratefully accepted as the homeless thanked and blessed volunteers. From bus passes to warm clothing … gifts the organizers hope will keep those living on the streets warm on cold nights and warm their hearts too. “Ya'll are really helping us to meet our needs,” one homeless man told a volunteer. The Labre Society distributed 480 holiday bags to Fort Worth's homeless adults and another 40 bags to children. |
